HostGator Review for Kenya (2026): Cheap to Start, Expensive to Keep

HostGator's intro prices look unbeatable and its 'unlimited' plans look generous. Both claims deserve scrutiny — especially from Kenya, where the servers are far away and the bill arrives in dollars.

HostGator is a serviceable legacy shared host with aggressive intro pricing, long refund windows and unlimited-style plans. From Kenya it is hard to recommend: USD-only card billing, no M-Pesa, offshore servers that add latency for local visitors, and renewals that land well above the advertised rate. It makes sense mainly for cheap short-term projects aimed at overseas audiences.

What stands out

  • Eligible shared plans include a first-year domain on terms of 12 months or more
  • Free SSL and migration tooling are published
  • Official documentation exposes storage tiers and renewal totals

Limitations

  • No M-Pesa or KES billing was verified
  • Published renewals can be substantially above introductory checkout
  • Automatic renewal is enabled by default
  • Free-domain value can be deducted from a refund

DoWebsites verdict: HostGator remains usable shared hosting, but it is difficult to recommend to a Kenyan buyer on price: its official renewal chart, USD billing and constrained backup policy materially weaken the introductory offer.

Price and terms checked 2026-08-11: Introductory checkout varies. Official Hatchling renewal: $158.27/year, $290.14/two years or $395.61/three years; each term is billed upfront.

HostGator: the decision in one table

Hatchling renewal$17.59 monthly; $158.27 yearly; $395.61 for three years
Baby renewal$24.19 monthly; $224.27 yearly; $593.61 for three years
Business renewal$30.79 monthly; $290.27 yearly; $791.61 for three years
BackupsHostGator weekly backup policy is subject to account-size/inode limits; shared restore can cost $49
Refund30 days for eligible hosting; bundled-domain fee is deducted

Renewal is the real HostGator price

HostGator’s own chart states that discounted plans move to regular pricing and that the full selected term is charged upfront. The three-year Hatchling renewal of $395.61 is a $10.99 monthly equivalent, not a $10.99 monthly debit. Compare the full second term in KES before accepting a first-term promotion.

The current shared tiers are not the old unlimited bundle

The current documentation presents tiered storage rather than a single limitless offer. Match Hatchling, Baby or Business to site count and storage, then check email, database and CPU/inode policies. Old Cloud, Reseller and Optimized WordPress products are no longer offered to new sign-ups according to the current comparison chart.

Backups can turn a cheap plan into a costly recovery

HostGator documents weekly provider backups for eligible accounts and states size/inode thresholds. The comparison chart shows a $49 shared-hosting restoration. Maintain automated off-account backups; do not wait for an incident to learn whether the account qualified for the provider copy.

Free domain and refund are linked

Eligible shared terms of 12 months or longer can include a first-year domain. If the hosting is refunded, HostGator deducts the domain value—currently documented as $17.99 plus tax for most eligible names and $18.99 for .com—while the registrant keeps the domain.

Migration wording depends on product

HostGator advertises migration tooling on shared hosting, while its comparison page reserves free content migration for eligible VPS/dedicated paths. Confirm whether your CMS, mailboxes, databases and DNS work are automated, assisted or billable before ordering.

Kenyan buyer verdict

HostGator makes most sense for an existing HostGator estate or a buyer with a specific compatibility reason. New Kenyan brochure sites normally have clearer local-billing or modern international alternatives. If choosing it, use a card with predictable FX fees and test latency for the actual audience.

Questions buyers actually need answered

How much does Hatchling renew for?

The official chart listed $158.27 for one year and $395.61 for three years when checked. The complete term is billed upfront.

Does HostGator back up shared hosting?

It documents weekly backups subject to eligibility limits. Shared restoration is listed at $49, so keep your own automated backup.

Is the free domain actually free after cancellation?

If an eligible hosting package is refunded, the standard domain value and tax are deducted; you retain the domain.

Does HostGator offer M-Pesa?

We did not verify native M-Pesa or KES billing. Model card FX charges and USD renewal.

Evidence boundary

This is a buying analysis, not an invented hands-on test. We verified the published offer and policies, separated introductory equivalents from money charged, and discounted claims we could not independently benchmark. Recheck the final checkout and keep an independent backup or export before moving a production service.
